Microsoft Announced the Plan of SQL Server on Linux

Microsoft SQL Server is a popular database system. It is also the one of top 3 database systems in the world (The other 2 are Oracle and MySQL). It is also the biggest database systems on Windows platform.

However, Microsoft SQL Server can only run on Windows platform, which limits its applications in the world. Oracle and MySQL all provide multiple platform editions such as Linux edition and Windows edition. Obviously why MS SQL Server did not expand more market share like Oracle and MySQL, was just because SQL Server can not run Linux etc..

The following ranking data is from DB-Engines, we can see MS SQL Server locates No. 3, but the No.4 MongoDB's score is far away behind it.

We see even MS SQL Server can not take market share on Linux or any other platforms, it is still getting No. 3. So can you image how MS SQL Server can be if it support Linux also ?

Microsoft SQL Server is to support Linux

Microsoft just announced that they launched the plan of SQL Server on Linux 2 days ago. From Scott Guthrie: "Today I’m excited to announce our plans to bring SQL Server to Linux as well. This will enable SQL Server to deliver a consistent data platform across Windows Server and Linux, as well as on-premises and cloud."

Microsoft also plan to release availability SQL Server on Linux version in 2017.
